January 1 -- Noon -- Polar Bear Plunge -- Local residents begin the New Year with a plunge in the chilly waters of nearby Storrie Lake. Event takes place on the Boat Dock of Storrie Lake State Park. January 10 -- 10:00 am -- Second Saturdays Artwalk/Las Vegas,NM -- The New Mexico Arts and Cultural District is promoting this popular event. Second Saturdays Artwalk is an authentic grass roots community event taking place every Second Saturday in the three historic commercial districts of Las Vegas ( from the Plaza Park to the Depot). January 12 through February 6 -- "Women of My Heart" -- An exhibition of photographs from India and Africa by Edith Dorman. The exibition will be shown at the Ray Drew Gallery located on the first floor of the Highlands University's Donnelly Library, The hours are from 8am to 5pm. January 18 -- 1:00pm -- "Reptiles and Amphibians of Northern New Mexico"-- Event takes place at the Las Vegas National Wildllife Refuge (Seating Limited to 40). Come and visit with the presenter: Esther Nelson, Wildlife Biologist, Region 3, Herpetological Coordinator, Santa Fe National Forest - Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District. January 22 -- 7:00pm -- Theater Production at the United World College -- This event will take place at the Citizens Committee for Historic Preservation/ Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center, located at 116 Bridge Street in Las Vegas, New Mexico. The Program will be presented by students of Tim Crofton: Theather instructor at the United World College. and will illistrate the army life at Fort Union for Private Eddie Matthews, 8th Calvery. January 23 -- 7:00pm -- “I Want to Be Bad: The Flapper and Her Song” -- Virtuoso song-and-piano team Jane Voss & Hoyle Osborne will present “I Want to Be Bad: The Flapper and Her Song” at the Kluge Auditorium of United World College-USA in Montezuma, New Mexico. This free concert-lecture is part of the New Mexico Chautauqua and is made possible by the New Mexico Humanities Council and the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. January 23 - February 6 -- "Internal Anxieties, External Imaginings" An Art exhibition by printmaker Todd Christensen in the Atrium of the Kluge Auditorium of UWC-USA. January 28 -- 6:00pm -- The Peking Acrobats -- Event takes place at the Historic Ilfeld Auditorium on the New Mexico Highlands University Campus. Brightly costumed tumblers, acrobats, cyclists, jugglers and clever clowns provide 90 minutes of familly fun. Amazing and Wondrous !!! From as early as age five, the hand-selected performers begin mastering disciplines that arose during the Ch’in Dynasty (225-207 B.C.), a dynamic period when acrobatic movements mirrored the pleasantries and struggles of daily life. In modern times the troupe remains the largest touring attraction of its kind! January 28 -- 7:00pm -- UWC Theatre Production Every one is warmly invited to see the first year Theatre Arts student's productions of "To The Loved Ones Back Home" -- An Absurdist Portrayal of Eddie Matthews and "Eddie Matthews: -- A Melodrama". Event will take place in the auditorium. Written, designed and performed by the classes. The combined show will last about an hour and recently recieved rave reviews when performed in Las Vegas. January 29 -- 6:00pm to 9:00pm -- Helping Hands Around the World: Halting Hunger and Homelessness -- The United World College will host a community fundraiser for the Samaritan House, a local organization that assists low-income people in our area with a food bank, shelter, and transitional housing program. Come and enjoy a night of international cuisine, a cultural performance emceed by radio personality and West Las Vegas School Principal Martha Johnsen, special activities, and a silent auction. All proceeds will be donated to the local Samaritan House in support of their mission to provide food and shelter to people in our community. The Good Samaritan Award will also be presented to an exemplary Las Vegas community member. Event takes place at the Montezuma Castle Ballroom, UWC-USA. Tickets are $20 per person, $10 for children under 18, available for purchase at Tome on the Range, Tito's Gallery, and Semilla Natural Foods. Sponsor packages available. January 30 -- 7:00 pm -- United World College Event -- Selected students from Central and South America and the Caribbean will present on current issues facing their regions. The event is free and open to the public. Presentations will take place in the Kluge Auditorium and the IT Center on the campus of United World College-USA in Montezuma, New Mexico. January 31 -- 1:00pm -- Castle Tours -- The United World College is pleased to provide free, student-led tours of the Montezuma Castle. While the tour is free, donations to the college are certainly appreciated. Tours begin promptly at 1:00pm and last approximately one hour. They begin in front of the Old Stone Hotel on the lower campus. Reservations are not necessary for the tours.
