October 23 -- 4:00pm to 6:00pm "Git fer Las Vegas, Cowboy" Exhibit -- Join us for the opening reception of Git Fer Vegas, Cowboy! at the City of Las Vegas Museum. In the early 20th century, the Las Vegas Cowboys’ Reunions were one of the biggest annual cowboy gatherings this side of the Mississippi. True to its ranching heritage origins, contestants vied for top honors in events taken directly from the range — no dime store cowboys in the bunch. Unlike today’s rodeo circuit, women competed in many events. Cowgirls like Montana Belle and Mayme Stroud wowed the crowds with bronc-riding, steer wrestling, and trick riding. Literati and the arts took note of the Reunions — film maker Tom Mix, artist Randall Davey, and author S. Omar Barker were in the crowd. The display includes saddles, photos, handbills, and other items relating to the annual event from 1915 through the 1960s. This exhibit documents how the event engaged all segments of the community, adapted over time, and answers the question “Why Las Vegas?” The exhibit continues through 2010. For more information call the City of Las Vegas Museum at 505-454-1401, extension 283 or The LasVegas/San Miguel Chamber of Commerce at 1-800-832-5947 or 505-425-8631.
