October 9 -- Second Saturday Artwalk 2010 -- Now in its third year the monthly Artwalk features Open Studios, Galleries, Readings, Live Music & more. Visit open studios in historic neighborhoods, plus galleries, shops and restaurants downtown. Enjoy the work of over 75 artists, including local painters, sculptors, jewelry designers, graphic designers, photographers, musicians, interior designers, writers, poets, santeros, media artists and graffiti artists. While the tour is free, donations to the college are certainly appreciated. Tours begin promptly at 1:00pm and last approximately one hour. They begin in front of the Old Stone Hotel on the lower campus. Reservations are not necessary for the tours. October 10 -- 7:00am to 7:00pm -- The Big Sit! -- The Big Sit! at Las Vegas National Wildlife Refuge. Bring a comfortable chair and have a seat in or near our 17 foot diameter birding circle centered on the Melton Pond Overlook. Come for a few minutes, a few hours or all day! We will be recording all the birds we see and hear and submitting our list to the National Big Sit! headquarters. If we spot the "golden bird" we could win $500 for Friends of Las Vegas NWR. This event is essentially a birding tailgate party. Bring a picnic, snacks, favored beverages or even a grill and set up in the parking lot! October 16 -- 8:30am -- Dia del Rio Rio Hike -- Celebrating "Dia del Rio" a Rio Grande watershed event. Meet at the visitor center at 8:30am, the hike departs from the Gallinas Nature Trail parking area at 9:00am. This is a strenuous 2-hour, 2-mile round trip hike that will require stepping on and over large rocks. We will be hiking to an overlook of the Gallinas River. Bring sunscreen, hat, water, hiking boots, binoculars, camera, and a walking stick. CROP WALK, a fundraising project of Church World Service, collects funds to relieve hunger here and around the world. 25 percent of the money raised in Las Vegas goes to hunger relief efforts here by supporting the Las Vegas Community Soup Kitchen and the Samaritan House. October 16 - 9:00am to Noon -- “Trek for Trash” -- It’s that time of year again when we need to all team up and do our part in keeping Las Vegas Beautiful! KLVB Group and the City of Las Vegas Solid Waste Department would love for you to join us on our continuous campaign to keep Las Vegas litter free and beautiful for all to see. Please, join us at Lincoln Park. All volunteers will be given a street map, trash bags and a lunch ticket upon signing up. October 16 - 7:00pm -- Gaza Mono-Logues -- UWC-USA is collaborating with New Mexico Highlands University, and The Nat Gold Players in a co-production of The Gaza Mono-Logues. The Gaza Mono-Logues are a collection of thirty-three monologues written by young Palestinian adults. The monologues describe their lives in Gaza , before, during, and after the war, and present unique and individual perspectives that have not been previously heard through the media. Director Tim Crofton says he hopes the monologues will create an opportunity for dialog. “The monologues do not answer any questions, but ask the questions we all need to be asking,”. Performance will take place at the Traveler’s Café. October 21 - 7:00pm -- “Glimpses of the Past” -- “Lydia Spencer Lane: I Married a Soldier.” -- Fort Union National Monument, National Park Service announces its’ monthly “Glimpses of the Past” presentation entitled “Lydia Spencer Lane: I Married a Soldier.” The program will be held at the CCHP/Santa Fe Trail Interpretive Center, 127 Bridge Street, in Las Vegas, Based on the book “I Married A Soldier”, presenter Van Ann Moore will portray the trials and tribulations of Lydia Spencer Lane, a military bride who lived at numerous military posts throughout New Mexico and Texas in the 19th century, including Fort Union.
